Watermelon Daiquiris

Summer is all about enjoying fresh fruit cocktails, BBQs, and spending time with friends. We suggest you do all three on July 23rd (and every other day this summer). But why this one date in particular? Because it’s National Hot Dog Day! While someone else is grilling the hot dogs, fix yourself one of these watermelon daiquiris, put your feet up and enjoy the warm weather.

While we have served up plenty of rum cocktails here on One Martini, they have mostly been mojitos. Some of the more popular ones are the Blackberry Mojito, Coconut Mojito and Chocolate Mint Mojito. In all of this mint muddling, daiquiri recipes were forgotten which really is a shame.

A basic daiquiri is white rum, fresh lime and a sweetener (usually simple syrup or sugar). Many of the daiquiris you see served today in restaurants are blended and overly sweet. There are also a lot of daiquiri mixes on the market you can buy. I’ve never tried any of them and I don’t plan on doing so. I prefer to make mine fresh, especially when they have fruit like these watermelon daiquiris. However, if you would like to try a good blended daiquiri recipe, check out these slushy strawberry daiquiris.

For your watermelon daiquiris, you can serve them either on the rocks or straight up. It all depends on what you like. I prefer mine on the rocks but that’s just me. If serving on the rocks, use a rocks glass. Instead of ice, you could freeze chunks of watermelon to add to the glass. If serving straight up, use a cocktail glass.

To make your life a little easier, I’ve included recipes for a single serving or a pitcher of watermelon daiquiris. That way you can make whatever you need based on the number of people you are serving. You’re welcome.

Watermelon Daiquiris

Single serving ingredients

  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 2 ounces fresh watermelon juice
  • 1 ounce fresh squeezed lime
  • Simple syrup to taste if desired
  • Sugar for rimming glass
  • Small watermelon slice for garnish

Pitcher ingredients (Serves 6)

  • 1 1/2 cups white rum
  • 1 1/2 cups fresh watermelon juice
  • 3/4 cup fresh squeezed lime juice
  • Simple syrup to taste if desired
  • Sugar for rimming glasses
  • 6 Small watermelon slices for garnish

Directions

  1. For fresh watermelon juice, puree watermelon in a blender or food processor and strain. Alternatively, juice watermelon in a juicer (no straining required for this method).
  2. Rim rocks or cocktail glass(es) with lime and dip in sugar.
  3. For single serving, combine white rum, watermelon juice and lime in a cocktail shaker with ice. Add simple syrup to taste, if desired. Shake and strain into glass. Garnish with a slice of watermelon.
  4. For pitcher recipe, combine white rum, watermelon juice and lime in a pitcher or bowl and stir. Add simple syrup to taste, if desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve. You can add a block of ice or frozen watermelon cubes to keep it cold if desired. Garnish with watermelon slices before serving.
