Between working extra hours each week, remodeling two bathrooms and life in general, there are many evenings where I come home ready for a drink. Lately, that drink has been this mezcal amaro cocktail. Smokey, bitter, spicy, not too sweet – it’s a sit back and relax kind of cocktail.
I really don’t remember how this drink came together. I think it was inspired by something I’d had recently, but I really can’t say. The only thing I know was that I wanted a cocktail that wasn’t too sweet. I also know I had a new bottle of Amaro Lucano I wanted to use.
The rest of the creation will probably remain a mystery. And that’s okay. The only thing that really matters is that I saved the recipe. Because really, without that I’d never remember what I made. And that would be a shame. A sad, sad, sad, shame. But let’s not think about that. Instead, go mix yourself up one of these beauties, put your feet up and relax. I know that’s what I want to do.
- 1 ounce mezcal (I used Fidencio)
- ½ ounce Amaro Lucano
- ½ ounce Batavia Arrack
- ½ ounce Campari
- 2 dashes grapefruit bitters (I used Scrappy's)
- Lemon peel for garnish
- Add all ingredients except garnish to a mixing glass and fill with ice.
- Shake and double strain into a rocks glass with a large cube.
- Express the oil of lemon peel over the glass, rub around the rim and drop garnish in the glass.
