Savoy Royal {a mezcal amaro cocktail}

Between working extra hours each week, remodeling two bathrooms and life in general, there are many evenings where I come  home ready for a drink. Lately, that drink has been this mezcal amaro cocktail. Smokey, bitter, spicy, not too sweet – it’s a sit back and relax kind of cocktail.

I really don’t remember how this drink came together. I think it was inspired by something I’d had recently, but I really can’t say. The only thing I know was that I wanted a cocktail that wasn’t too sweet. I also know I had a new bottle of Amaro Lucano I wanted to use.

The rest of the creation will probably remain a mystery. And that’s okay. The only thing that really matters is that I saved the recipe. Because really, without that I’d never remember what I made. And that would be a shame. A sad, sad, sad, shame. But let’s not think about that. Instead, go mix yourself up one of these beauties, put your feet up and relax. I know that’s what I want to do.

Savoy Royal
Serves: 1
  • 1 ounce mezcal (I used Fidencio)
  • ½ ounce Amaro Lucano
  • ½ ounce Batavia Arrack
  • ½ ounce Campari
  • 2 dashes grapefruit bitters (I used Scrappy's)
  • Lemon peel for garnish
  1. Add all ingredients except garnish to a mixing glass and fill with ice.
  2. Shake and double strain into a rocks glass with a large cube.
  3. Express the oil of lemon peel over the glass, rub around the rim and drop garnish in the glass.

    There is nothing that makes me want to throw an old school tantrum like realizing that I have neglected to take the five minutes to jot down a great recipe. So glad you escaped this fate…and that you are sharing with the class.

      It’s definitely a tantrum-worthy occasion when you forget to write down a keeper recipe. Or when you can’t find the little piece of paper that you wrote said recipe down on, but we’ll pretend that never happens.
