Martini 101

A classic martini is a far cry from the martinis of today, which can vary anywhere from dessert like to sweet and sour.

Classic Martini Recipe

1.5 to 2 oz gin

1 drop to 1 oz of vermouth (sweet or dry, depending on taste)

Garnish – olives, pearl onion, lemon twist, etc.

For a Dry (Or Montgomery) Classic Martini: Roll vermouth in martini glass until it forms a film or coating. Dump out access. Shake 2 oz gin and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with olives.

For a Wet Classic Martini: Shake 1.5 oz gin and 1 oz vermouth and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with olives.

For a Gibson Martini: Substitute the olives in a Classic Martini for three pearl onions.

For a Dirty Martini: Substitute the vermouth in a Classic Martini for olive juice. Garnish with olives.

For a Perfect Martini: Use 50% dry and 50% sweet vermouth.

For a Vodka Martini: Substitute gin for vodka.

Shaken or Stirred?

This is a matter of preference. Some martini drinkers like their drinks stirred because shaking “bruises” the gin, causing it to taste bitter. Others prefer a shaken martini, claiming the flavor of the gin is released by the bruising. Shaking will also cause clouding, which can ruin the initial presentation of the drink. However, the cloudiness quickly disappears.

The best part about martinis is there’s no wrong way to make (or drink) one!

Cheers!

I’ve always thought I’d be all bad a** and drink straight up martinis. Yah, hasn’t happened yet. Maybe I’ll try one of the concoctions above and give it a try!
