Grenadine for Cocktails {and a Tequila Sunrise Cocktail Recipe}

Grenadine is a sweet pomegranate syrup that is used in many different cocktail recipes. We think it is essential for home bars to have a bottle on hand because you never know when you are going to need it for making drinks (Red Velvet Martini, anyone?). The real question with grenadine for cocktails is which one should you use. Or should you make it yourself.

Make your own grenadine for cocktails

I have never made my own grenadine because I’m a bit lazy. Also, the homemade stuff doesn’t last as long and I wouldn’t use it fast enough. But I have heard really good things about Jeffery Morgenthaler’s homemade grenadine. If you want to make your own, I suggest you start with his recipe.

Buying grenadine for cocktails

The most popular option on the market is Rose’s grenadine syrup. However, I won’t touch this stuff with a 10–foot pole because the first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup and there is nothing pomegranate in it. At all. Also, it’s way too sweet for me.

Luckily there are other options.

Right now I have a bottle of Sonoma Syrup’s grenadine in my fridge. The first ingredient is liquid cane sugar and the second is pomegranate concentrate. There are a few other ingredients in the syrup but they are already off to a good start with no HFCS and it actually contains pomegranate. The syrup has a nice red color which will help your drinks look pretty. I think it has a good, rich flavor without being overly sweet.

The other brand I’ve tried is Stirrings authentic grenadine. This one starts with water and then pomegranate juice from concentrate. It has about half the calories and sugar as the other two grenadines I listed above which might be important for some people.

It has a nice taste without being overly sweet. When mixing in drinks, I found this syrup to not be as red as I would have liked. While that doesn’t affect the taste of drinks, I do like to see a pretty color (especially when taking pictures).
