About AGWA de Bolivia

As I mentioned already, AGWA de Bolivia is a herbal liqueur that is made with wild bolivian coca leaf along with 36 other natural herbs and botanicals including ginseng, green tea, lavender and guarana. The coca leaves are handpicked in Bolivia and then shipped to Amsterdam under armed guard where they are first decocainised. After that, they are infused with alcohol and the other ingredients to create this 60 proof liqueur.

Before I go any further, I just want to make sure that it’s clear that AGWA does not contain any cocaine. It’s approved by the E.U. (Narcotics commission approved), FDA (Food & Drugs administration) and TTB (Homeland security finished liquid & label approved).

Back to the booze… The color of AGWA is bright green, probably from the certified colors added to it. When frozen, it looks as if it’s glowing. On the nose, it’s herbal with notes of menthol and eucalyptus. As far as the taste, there is a lot going on with this liqueur. I’ve never tasted coca leaves so I can’t say what they taste like but AGWAstarts out being sweet with lemon/lime notes. After that the herbal flavors come through followed by spice.

According to the company, when drinking AGWA with lime the various coca leaf alkaloids are supposed to be activated to mimic the “oxygen buzz” experienced when chewing coca leaves or drinking coca-leaf tea at high altitude in the Andes; it tunes you in. They call this the AGWABUZZ.

Where to buy AGWA de Bolivia

On AGWA’s website they have a list of places where you can find AGWA. I searched for it online at Bevmo! and could only find the sample bottles. I did find it listed at Drink up NY listed for $31.99 for a 750ml bottle.

The AGWA shot is said to be a favorite way to drink this liqueur. Simply pour frozen AGWA in a shot glass and serve with a lime wedge. It can also be used in various cocktails either as a mixer or to replace the main spirit. I used AGWA in a margarita in place of triple sec and found that enjoyable. I also liked it in the Cranberry Buzz cocktail recipe listed below.
